Stapelia variegata, or Star flower. Now here's something you don't see everyday...a flower that looks like it came from outer space. If you want a laugh, ask your friends to take a whiff, it smells terrible! The odor is much milder in dim light and cool weather. The odor attracts carrion feeders (flies, beetles, etc.) which pollinate it. Stapelias are actually succulent milkweeds (Asclepiadaceae), that thrive under well-lit household conditions. This one does well in hanging baskets or tall pots.
